Principle of field emission The mirror potential (–e 2 /4x) is overlapped by supplying high electric field potential (–eFx) on a metal, which is finally responsible for reducing the surface potential barrier. Therefore, electrons in the metal can penetrate the surface by quantum mechanical tunneling effect, because of decreasing the thickness (Δx) of surface potential barrier
